Allegations of ‘sexually transgressive behavior’ resulted in two investigations, a public penance and a resignation
Popular Dutch reality show ‘The Voice of Holland’ has been taken off the air after ‘several people’ involved were accused of sexual misconduct and abuse of power. The music program, which sparked The Voice broadcasts in other countries, was put on hold following a statement from broadcaster BNNVARA, which said a new program would be airing dedicated to exploring the “sexually transgressive behavior on The Voice of Holland.”
BNNVARA said so”received several stories of sexually transgressive behavior from several people” during a long-term investigation. Group leader Jeroen Rietbergen turned out to be one of the nominees and resigned. “This Saturday, the editorial staff received the confessions and apologies from the leader of The Voice, Jeroen Rietbergen. He announced that he would immediately stop working at The Voice,“, we read in the release of BNNVARA. Rietbergen later confirmed that he had “sexual contactwith women involved in a program and sent them explicit messages. Only therapy helped him”permanently changeand return to a normal family life, the musician said, apologizing to his employer, his family and the women affected. However, Rietbergen is not the only person accused of such “sexually transgressive behavior.” One of the show’s coaches, Ali B, has been reported to the police, according to Dutch media, although he denies all the allegations. “It’s an accusation of something that happened a long time ago, but it’s not true“, said the rapper on Instagram. Broadcaster RTL and production company ITV ordered an independent investigation and temporarily suspended the show. Calling the allegations “very serious and shocking“, RTL said it had not known about it before receiving an email from BNNVARA. The broadcaster added that he takes the situation”extremely seriously” like “participants, employees, everyone must be able to work in complete safety.”
These assurances, however, did not convince long-time coach Anouk. The singer announced her resignation on Sunday, saying she no longer wanted to work”in a place where a number of men for years have abused their position.”
