Its Black Sand BST34 series of power amplifiers is designed as a drop-in replacement for existing 3G GaAs (gallium arsenide) power amplifiers while the BST35 series integrates more intelligence and functionality on-chip to reduce the incidence of dropped calls, and network operators' capital expenditure requirements and increase real-world data rates. On June 24, 2014, Black Sand Technologies was acquired by Qualcomm. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Austin semiconductor company bought by tech giant Qualcomm

Email  |  Twitter Black Sand Technologies Inc., an Austin-based "fabless" semiconductor company, has been acquired by technology giant Qualcomm Inc. Black Sand disclosed on its website that the deal concluded June 18 with California-based Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM), which develops digital communications products. Company officials couldn’t be reached for comment. Black Sand, founded in 2005, specializes in power amplifier technology for wireless applications. It reportedly raised $28.2 million in investment capital. Fabless semiconductor companies outsource the production of silicon chips used in the products they make. In early 2012, Black Sand completed a $10 million Series C round of funding. Investors included Massachusetts-based North Bridge Venture Partners and Austin Ventures LP . At the time, executive said they planned to use the capital to increase production for use in 3G phones, tablets and datacards. The company employed 15 workers in 2012.
