Pure, Split/Second dev Black Rock closing its doors

Dec 6, 2018

The developer behind acclaimed racers like Pure and Split/Second has been shut … Disney-owned Black Rock Studio developed some of our favorite racing games from the past few years: the sleeper ATV game Pure and the action racer Split/Second . But those successes weren't enough, and Disney has officially closed down the studio. Earlier in the year the studio was hit with a round of layoffs. More recently, according to a statement from Disney released to Eurogamer , the studio's latest project did not receive the go-ahead, which in turn led to the end of Black Rock. "Disney Interactive Studios confirms that Black Rock Studios' current project has not been greenlit for further development, consequently the company informed employees yesterday of the intent to enter a consultation process on the proposal to close the studios," read the statement. Founded in 1999, the Brighton, UK-based Black Rock specialized entirely on developing action racing games. Prior to Pure and Split/Second, the studio worked on both the MotoGP and ATV Offroad Fury series. However, just as new studios popped up after the closing of outfits like Ensemble and Grin, ex-Black Rock employees are already working on new ventures. Both ShortRound Games and RoundCube Entertainment were formed in the wake of the first round of layoffs earlier in the year. No announcements have been made as to what either studio is working on.
