By Karen Robes Meeks Staff Writer Posted: Photo Gallery LONG BEACH - There's a movement afoot to empower an under-represented group in the ranks of local bike riders. City officials, business owners and bicycle activists gathered Wednesday at the Bikestation for the launch of a campaign called, Let's Double the Number of Women & Girls Riding Bikes. "We need to get it out there that they know that we have programs, that there's an opportunity to ride a bike and that there are women-only group rides so you feel safe and you don't feel like you're competing with the guys," said Elizabeth Williams, president of Long Beach-based Cali Bike Tours. The effort strives to broaden what has been a low ridership group. Women account for just 24 percent of bicycle trip riders in the nation, according to a new Alliance for Biking & Walking report. Locally, women make up 15 percent of bike-to-work commuters in Long Beach and 20 percent in Los Angeles. Part of the campaign involves promoting the first women-only League Certified Bike Safety Instructor scholarship program in the nation this summer. About 20 women in Southern California are accredited with the League of American Bicyclists, which created the program - five of whom are from the greater Long Beach area. The summer program will provide scholarships to train 12 women, who then will donate 25 hours of bike safety training back to their communities. Details for scholarship applications will be released Wednesday. "We want to give women the comfort and confidence that these streets are safe enough for them," Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal said. "If women feel that these streets are safe enough for them, I know that they will let their children ride more. " Officials will also host a fundraising event in late March to support the campaign, called "Moving Long Beach: Why Style Matters to Active Living Advocacy. " "We believe that women are an indicator species," said Jennifer Klausner, executive director of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition. "When you see more women riding, and see an equal number of men and women riding, it's a sign that you have a community truly giving people choices.
