Kibo buys web-based e-commerce platform Mozu

Oct 18, 2016

By Katie EvansChief Technology Editor The acquisition comes just weeks after Kibo’s purchase of personalization vendor Baynote. E-commerce vendor Kibo Software Inc.  said today it has bought cloud-based e-commerce platform Mozu from Volusion LLC. Kibo provides omnichannel, e-commerce platform, order management and mobile commerce services to retailers. The purchase price was not disclosed. “This investment represents our commitment to empowering our customers to increase sales and improve consumer loyalty,” says Kenneth Frank, CEO of Kibo. Kibo also brings new technologies to existing Mozu customers, including an order management system and mobile commerce tools, Frank says. Jason Wallis, chief technology officer at Mozu says Kibo “is dedicated to aggressively invest” in its commerce platform. In 2013 Volusion, a provider of e-commerce software to about 50,000 small businesses according to its website, stepped into the market for larger companies by launching Mozu, an e-commerce platform for online operations with annual sales of up to $100 million. Volusion launched Mozu to appeal to existing clients who were considering migrating off of the company’s Volusion e-commerce platform, which caters to online companies doing up to $5 million in annual sales, as well as to prospective clients that may be considering e-commerce platforms from such companies as Demandware Inc. Like Demandware, which is now owned by Salesforce.com, as well as the Volusion-branded e-commerce platform, Mozu is offered under a software-as-a-service model, under which clients rent the technology over the Internet without having to install the software on their own servers. Volusion says selling Mozu will allow it to focus on its existing and future small and medium-sized merchants. Volusion e-commerce packages start as low as $15 per month and rise to $135 for extras including unlimited products and a dedicated account manager. A spokeswoman did not respond to an inquiry on Mozu’s pricing but according to software review platform G2 Crowd final cost negotiations to purchase Mozu must be conducted with the vendor. Mozu’s e-commerce clients include JellyBelly.com, No. 922 in the Internet Retailer 2016 Top 1000 and Bluefly.com, No. 223 in the Internet Retailer 2016 Top 500. The acquisition of Mozu comes just weeks after Kibo’s purchase of cloud-based personalization vendor Baynote. Baynote mines the collective behavior of online shoppers to create buyer profiles. Retailers can then use the profiles to personalize an e-commerce site for each visitor and to provide targeted, relevant cross-selling and up-selling opportunities. The purchase price of Baynote also was not disclosed. “Personalizing experiences at every touchpoint is one of the top priorities for retailers to drive growth and loyalty,” Frank said in announcing the Baynote acquisition. “We found Baynote’s technology, backed by cutting-edge data science, can move the needle for this industry. The Baynote platform is designed and architected to be self-service and easy to implement, enabling speed to market and value creation. Individualization has proven to uplift sales and we are excited to bring this to B2C and B2B retailers and brands of all shapes and sizes.” Baynote will be integrated into Kibo’s offerings. However, Baynote’s personalization services will continue to be available to all retailers even if they are not using Kibo. In 2015 e-commerce platform provider MarketLive Inc. and order fulfillment software firm  Shopatron  merged to  form Kibo . MarketLive provides a variety of services to 14 e-retailers in the Top 1000 and Shopatron to five, according to the  2017 Leading Vendors to the Top 1000 . Topics
