Omnivore invests in Bangalore-based agri-tech startup Barrix

Jun 18, 2013

BY  Bruhadeeswaran R Barrix marks fifth portfolio investment for Omnivore and its second deal in as many months this year. Godrej Agrovet-backed early-stage VC fund Omnivore Partners has struck its second deal in as many months this year by investing in Bangalore-based Barrix Agro Sciences Pvt Ltd. Barrix seeks to develop technology enabled cost-effective solutions to reduce the use of pesticides in crop production. The company was founded by D Mayil Vaganan and Lokesh Makam in July 2011. Vaganan was previously a senior scientist with Daiichi Sankyo-owned drug maker Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd and also worked with a biotech firm before founding Barixx. Although the invested amount could not be ascertained, Omnivore typically invests Rs 5 crore ($0.85 million) in its portfolio companies. Both Omnivore and Barrix spokespersons confirmed the investment, but declined to disclose further details. Recently, Barrix, which emerged as the winner of Sankalp Awards 2013 in the rural business category, received funding of around Rs 5 crore facilitated by the forum. The firm is involved in developing next generation ‘pheromone’ traps that provide farmers with crop protection while reducing their dependence on chemical insecticides. Currently, it reaches out to about 15,000 farmers in 16 districts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu and plans to expand its traps to protect crops such as rice, wheat, sugarcane, brinjal and cotton. Barrix marks fifth portfolio investment for Omnivore. In April 2013, Guwahati-based processed food company Arohan Foods Pvt Ltd raised an undisclosed amount in Series A from Omnivore. In October, 2012, Omnivore had put in Rs 5 crore ($0.95 million) in Bangalore-based agri-tech startup FrontalRain Technologies and also invested an undisclosed sum in Rajkot-based agri equipment maker Khedut Agro. Earlier in August 2011, it bought 33 per cent stake in Skymet, a private weather forecasting company. Mark Kahn, founder and partner with Omnivore Partners, had previously said the firm is ideally planning to invest in four-five companies in a year. (Edited by Joby Puthuparampil Johnson)
