Founder’s remorse over Babylon’s unhealthy stock

Nov 23, 2022

UKHotViews Back in April 2015, our (now) MD, Tola Sargeant mentioned a little-known UK tech SME that had won a £15,000 prize in the BT Infinity Lab Competition for SMEs with Innovative Ideas for Public Services. Less than a year later, Babylon Health (as it was to become) raised $25m at a mooted valuation of $100m as it revved up its push into the UK ‘on demand GP’ market (see Rivers of Babylon run deeper with $25m funding round ). Much, much has happened since then – including what turned out to be a hugely ill-advised IPO on NYSE via – you guessed – a SPAC in June last year (see Babylon announces $4.2bn SPAC deal ). Within months, Babylon’s shares crashed so spectacularly that the company was at risk of being turfed from the NYSE; they did a ‘reverse stock split’ to get the price back over a dollar. In a masterful study of understatement, founder, chairman and CEO Ali Parsa called Babylon’s stock market performance “an unbelievable, unmitigated disaster, with the benefit of hindsight it is super simple to understand,” in an interview in yesterday’s Financial Times . It really didn’t require hindsight!
