Canola exports to Pakistan to resume

Aug 19, 2021

news, local-news, The export of canola seeds to Pakistan will resume after five years, the federal government has announced. Australian canola seed producers can resume exporting later this year after the federal government worked with Pakistani authorities to resolve phytosanitary and technical import issues. The deal is expected to generate significant revenue for exporters and support local jobs and businesses. Pakistan imported $426 million of canola in 2020, with Australia last exporting $30 million of canola to the growing market in 2016-17. Federal Member for Grey Rowan Ramsey said he was very pleased with this announcement. "Canola is the predominant oilseed crop in South Australia and the third largest crop grown after wheat and barley," he said. "It is a crop grown across the state and we are the world's second largest exporter of canola seed. "The resumption of exports to Pakistan will open new opportunities for canola producers in Grey." He said trade created jobs, drove innovation and underpinned economic growth. "Farmers in Grey produce high-quality, reliable canola and we welcome the opportunity to reach new customers to help local producers grow and support our community," Mr Ramsey said. Trade Minister Dan Tehan said the federal government was supporting Australian exporters to reach new international markets through the $73 million Agribusiness Expansion Initiative and with help from Austrade. "Exporters are helping to drive Australia's economic recovery while creating jobs and supporting local businesses and communities," he said. "Our government is supporting exporters to diversify their customer base by proactively pursuing new free trade agreements and programs like the Agribusiness Expansion Initiative and IFAM that help businesses succeed internationally." Agribusiness trading company Cargill Australia's director of corporate affairs for Asia Pacific Peter McBride said Pakistan had the potential to become a significant market for Australian producers. "We now have access to a market we haven't been exported to for several years," he said. "It opens up opportunities for Australia to diversify its canola exports to a growing market. "Best of all, it means Cargill and other traders can attain the best possible price for Australian canola farmers as Pakistan is currently paying premium prices for canola seeds." /images/transform/v1/crop/frm/luca.cetta/f46f0ca4-23cb-49a6-a4ad-44b135f876dd.JPG/r0_85_6000_3475_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg
