LinkedIn Local Belfast in aid of Aware NI

May 24, 2022

The past few years of Covid isolation has resulted in a tsunami of mental health-related problems among the public and professionals. With this in mind, Belfast-based Linkedln trainer, Rodney Doherty, organised a dual-purpose event, business networking and fundraising in aid of AWARE. AWARE is the depression charity for Northern Ireland. It is the only charity which works exclusively with those with depression and bipolar disorder. The family-run Ballymac Hotel was the stunning setting for this professional, yet informal gathering. What is a Linkedln Local Event? It is an opportunity to get to know the people behind their LinkedIn profiles. Business people understand the value of face-to-face meetings and developing real relationships. It is the personality of the person that you get to meet first and foremost, not just their photo, tagline or background. Building upon the natural need to seek partnerships, collaborations and kinship the theme of this Linkedln Local meeting was mental health. Mental Health Awareness Week runs from May 9 to 15. The theme this year is loneliness. Raising awareness of loneliness, depression, bipolar disorder and the practical steps we can take to address this was the thread that held the speakers' talks together. Lisa Abell-Farrelly introduced the charity AWARE. She explained their aims and how they offer support. She talked about removing the stigma associated with mental illness. This was followed by a series of speakers on the topic including Judith Doherty and Joanne McConville. Both shared their own personal experiences and expertise. Coping techniques were discussed along with a specific way to deal with them by John Harrison of Therapeutic Lifestyle Coaching followed by Turan Mirza of Feel-Good Hypnosis. Weekly Business Digest Sign Up The event was sponsored jointly by Rodney Doherty and Mercury Security and Facilities Management Services. Francis Cullen offered insights into some best practices and how it supports its own staff and families in times of Mental Health struggles. Throughout the day, buoyed by countless cups of tea and coffee along with a finger-food buffet, countless opportunities were taken to meet faces old and new and develop and reinforce business networks. Thankfully all those in attendance left happy and even better the charity received a few hundred-pound donations in the process. If you are a business owner then why not follow Rodney Doherty on Linkedin and keep an eye out for the other speakers too. If you, or anyone you know, are struggling with your mental health AWARE’s free-to-attend support groups provide a safe space to meet with others on a similar journey who can understand, encourage and suggest helpful coping methods. AWARE also delivers information outreach sessions and mental health and well-being programmes into communities, schools, colleges, universities, and workplaces to raise awareness of depression whilst equipping people with the tools they need to best look after their minds. These programmes include a suite of Mood Matters programmes, Living Life to the Full, Mental Health First Aid, and Mindfulness.
