gorodenkoff/iStock via Getty Images Aurora Innovation (NASDAQ: AUR ) fell 17% on Tuesday afternoon as TD Cowen initiated shares with a Market Perform, saying it needs more luster. The firm set a price target of $3, the lowest among analysts tracked by Seeking Alpha. "Our Market Perform rating on AUR shares is largely due to our view that management is putting themselves in a self-defined corner around commercialization timelines," analysts led by Jeffrey Osborne wrote in a note. Aurora plans to launch Horizon, the first autonomous service powered by the Aurora Driver, next year. "The team believes they will be ready to commercialize their technology by 4Q24 and is reporting a readiness index that is vague and also self-defined." AUR is making progress, but shares could be under pressure should its timeline not be met. "Given the disruptive nature of Class 8 autonomy, we would rather miss the first leg of upside to shares should they commercialize the I-45 lane from Dallas to Houston on time rather than recommend shares now," Osborne & co. wrote. "We like the team, partnerships and unique technology stack Aurora ( AUR ) has developed, but given the move from ~$1 to ~$3+ in equity value in the last 6 to 9 months, we would rather sit on the sidelines for now as any kind of commercialization delay likely leads to a better entry point." Shares are up more than 155% year-to-date. The stock has two Strong Buy ratings from Wall Street analysts and three Holds.
