Cleaning Up Carbon-Heavy Trucking

Apr 18, 2022

Cleaning Up Carbon-Heavy Trucking When it comes to industries that are most in need of help in terms of sustainability, the trucking industry must be near the top of the list. Reducing carbon emissions from an industry that literally runs on diesel fuel is a difficult undertaking, but one that Encinitas-based  Katherine StolinSustainability StrategistFlock Freight “Last year we saved over 21,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions,” said Flock Freight Sustainability Strategist Kathrine Stolin. Flock Freight reduces carbon emissions mostly through its main innovation – a software platform with a proprietary algorithm able to take multiple pieces of freight from different customers and pool it together on the same truckload in a multi-drop route. “That’s different from other trucking modes because instead of using warehouses to physically bring freight together from different locations, take it off a truck, organize it, put it back on a truck and send it in the same direction, we’re using technology to do that without needing to mess with the warehouse,” Stolin said. The Flock Freight platform also reduces inefficiencies in routes taken by trucks, lowers damage rates “and another huge environmental benefit is we’re filling trucks a lot more than traditional freight modes by putting freight from several customers together,” she added. Stolin estimates that Flock Freight cuts emissions by between 15% and 40% compared to traditional trucking carrying the same freight and depending on factors such as weight and distance. In addition, Flock Freight purchases carbon offsets to be able to off customers its carbon neutral FlockDirect option. Oren ZaslanskeyCEOFlock Freight “Before there will be electric or autonomous trucks at scale, the shipping process itself has the potential to become drastically more efficient,” said Flock Freight CEO Oren Zaslanskey. “We strive to be as efficient and optimal as we can be by filling trucks to capacity,” Zaslanskey added. “And we look at sustainability as a service that is accessible to every shipper, including SMBs. We are proud to have a brand associated with a high-quality, lower-cost service – FlockDirect – that is more efficient and therefore more sustainable.”   Good Business   In addition to being good for the environment, Flock Freight’s load sharing platform is also good for business. The company reported a 300% increase in customer growth in the last year and last month it completed its expansion into a 15,000-sqaure-foot “second headquarters” in Chicago. “Chicago has long been the home of logistics and establishing a presence there has always been a priority of ours,” Zaslanskey said. “Flock Freight sits at the intersection of technology and freight, so we’ve intentionally positioned our office in Chicago’s Fulton Market tech neighborhood. We’ve committed to making it our second headquarters and we are doing so by growing the team [there] to over 150 employees in 2022 to further support the success of our business across the U.S.” Chris PickettChief Strategy OfficerFlock Freight To lead the new Chicago hub, Zaslanskey tapped former Coyote Logistics executive Chris Pickett to be Flock Freight’s chief strategy officer. “I know how difficult it is to execute shared truckload at scale – both mathematically and operationally, and Flock Freight has solved it, period,” Pickett said. “The tech not only works, but it works better and better every day. I couldn’t be more fired up about this team and this opportunity to help create a more sustainable and more efficient transportation ecosystem for everyone.” Stolin said customers, in addition to saving costs by sharing loads with other companies, are attracted to Flock Freight because there are not many options out there to help cut carbon emissions and reach their corporate sustainability goals. Last month, the SEC proposed new rules that would make certain kinds of sustainability reporting mandatory, which would make Flock Freight’s trucking model even more attractive to even more companies. “Especially those companies that fall into the bucket of needing to report on their Scope 3 carbon emission, that tends to be their downstream distribution and things like that,” Stolin said. “That is notoriously the hardest scope of emissions to track and that is exactly what we currently do for customers.”   Pledged to Sustainability Goals Just as Flock Freight helps other companies with sustainability assessments, it has undergone assessments of its own. In June 2020, Flock Freight became a Certified B Corporation after taking the B Lab Assessment, a score card of a company’s environmental, social and governance practices. To pass the assessment, companies need to score an 80 and Flock Freight was “already at that point,” Stolin said. “Flock Freight has always been purpose-driven and we were already walking the walk to begin with which is lovely and convenient because something like B Corp was – while still challenging for us to go through the certification, we kind of were already meeting the level of rigor needed,” Stolin added. “We were already reducing emission directly through shared truckload. We already had really strong people programs and so adopting B Corp was a way for us to tap into a conscious for-profit business community and also figure out how do we grow and how do we get better. We sort of use it as tool for that, at this point.”   In addition to committing to B Corp standards, Flock Freight has also signed onto The Climate Pledge – a commitment to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, 10 years ahead of the goal set by the United Nations’ Paris Climate Agreement. “Sustainability is deeply rooted in our business model, and it will continue to be in the future,” Zaslanskey said.
