Your weekend arts forecast: It’s all about the visuals

Jan 7, 2021

Beth Kauffman, one of the ArtLoft artists exhibiting this weekend, created this four-foot-square, glow-in-the dark painting entitled “Big Bull Mahi Mahi.” The second weekend of 2021 isn’t a whole lot different from the first. There are very few performances, of any sort, although that will likely change as January rolls on. No, Covid’s still keeping a pretty tight lid on things, gathering-crowd-wise. There are a number of opportunities, however, to enjoy a fresh look at some new examples of visual art this weekend. It’s all still socially-distanced, of course. Soon enough, we’ll all be able to celebrate – together – the end of that necessary but wholly unfortunate situation. Kudos to the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance for re-starting its monthly series, the Second Saturday ArtWalk. It’s not really a linear “walk” from one gallery or studio to the next, as it traditionally has been (and will be again). Not all the usual suspects have chosen to participate, and those that have are choosing their own hours for greeting visitors. So it’s gone off script for the time being – there are no trolleys these days, either. If you’re game, here are a few of Saturday’s participating artists, studios and galleries: The Factory St. Pete: Check it out, at 2622 Fairfield Avenue S. (just around the corner from Duncan McClellan’s place in the Warehouse Arts District), from 5 to 9 p.m. Artwork by Ashley Rivers, Carla Bristol, Saudade Toxosi, Patricia Moses, Hao Penghe and Sam Doty. Duncan McClellan Glass: 2342 Emerson Avenue S., open for tours 11 a.m.-4 p.m. by appointment only. Charlie Parker Pottery: 2724 6th Ave., S., 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Mirella Cimato Gallery: 2145 1st Avenue S, 5-8 p.m., works by art photographer Dale Leifeste. Morean Arts Center & Glass Studio: 719 Central Ave. 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. (art) and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (glass) St. Pete Art Works:  2412 Central Ave. 12-8 p.m. Featured exhibition is Unbridled Art, The Exploration of the Colors Green and Orange in Painting on Paper and Canvas by Marie Cummings; live music from Rare Phorm 5-8 p.m. Zen Glass Studio:  600 27th St S. Open 5-9 p.m. Download the complete ArtWalk list for Saturday, Jan 9 here . And more art news The new Creative Clay exhibit, Hope, opens virtually during Saturday’s event – paintings, fiber art and mixed media, portraits, nature, animals, and abstracts. Creative Clay’s Community Arts Program serves 50-60 adult artists with neuro-differences each week. Sixteen artists who work in the Florida ArtLofts building down will show their work starting today at the Florida CraftArt exhibition gallery, 501 Central Ave. Among the media: drawings, encaustic, glass, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography and sculpture. Artists in the exhibition are Javier Dones, Julie Dye, Mavis Gibson, Susan Hess, Brian James, Gilbert Johnson, Beth Kauffman, Betsy Lester, Karen Porter, Rebecca Skelton, Brandy Stark, Kas Turner, Joe Walles, Lee West, Rick Whalen and  Donna Winchester. The Artists of ArtLofts will be in place thrlugh Jan. 23. For more information, click here. Ego Death, a show of new paintings from Jabari Reed-Diop, aka iBOMS, is at the MIZE Gallery this month. Chad Mize’s traditional virtual tour happens Friday 6 p.m. (on Facebook) and 7 p.m. (on Instagram. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a..-2 p.. Sundays. A few more events Coastal Creative, a full-service video and podcast production company at 2201 1st Ave. S, throws open its doors Saturday for a public grand opening, 12-9 p.m. Photographer Stephanie Agudelo’s unique portraiture will be on display (check it out here ), and the day also includes silk aerialist performances, a live DJ and local vendors.
