Arenal Energy Launches Water Purification Project for Dominican Republic Via Indiegogo Crowdfunding Campaign

Dec 12, 2014

Tweet LIGHTNING RELEASES  12/11/14  Dallas, TX  Arenal Energy Corporation, headquartered in Dallas, Texas, has announced the launch of a crowdfunding campaign to install a proprietary water purification system in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros to provide clean water for daily use and to help kill water borne-bacteria responsible for the cholera epidemic in the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The Dominican Republic has a severe shortage of clean water and is experiencing the largest cholera epidemic in modern times. The epidemic has sickened over 30,000 people and killed 472 in the Dominican Republic since November 2010. In neighboring Haiti, it has infected more than 700,000 people and caused 8,721 deaths since October 2010. To purify water on an urban scale, the Santiago de los Caballeros Water Project calls for the installation of a proprietary electrical oxygenation system which uses oxygen ions from generated ozone to neutralize and remove biological, organic and chemical contaminants. The system requires no consumables or chemicals and has no moving parts other the water in treatment. In recent years the continuity of potable water supply services in Santiago has been affected by strong population growth due to increased immigration from other areas of the country. Various factors affect the water quality in the Dominican Republic, including: poor condition of purification systems, minimal operational controls, low level of maintenance of treatment plants, and mostly intermittent systems. 38.4% of water systems have no chlorination system installed. The fact that a chlorination system exists is not a guarantee that water is actually properly disinfected, and water contaminated by bacteria is an ongoing problem. Eric Johnson, Arenal Energy’s CEO, stated: “The need for clean water in emerging countries is one of the great challenges facing the global community today. According to the World Health Organization, every year there are over a million and a half deaths related to unsafe water, most of which are among young children. More than a billion people worldwide lack access to a sanitary water source. But we have the technology to address this challenge, and reduce the incidence of water-borne illnesses.” Arenal has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funding for this project.
