The 2023 Last Minute Tabletop Game Gift Guide

Dec 15, 2023

I am an author and game designer writing about tabletop RPGs. You'll be asked to sign into your Forbes account. Got it Got it! Gale Force Nine It’s now crunch time on the 2023 holiday season. Shipping deadlines are coming due in the next few days and there are some folks with tabletop gamers on their list who are still looking for the right gift. The time has come to pull the trigger and this list is here to help hit the right target. For readers who follow my Dungeons & Dragons coverage, be sure to check out my articles focused on that game. One is aimed at Dungeons & Dragons players. The other is gifts for Dungeon Masters. Please note that these vendors provided review copies of items for consideration in this article. Links are provided to order each item directly from the vendor. Please consider, if possible, purchasing these items from local game stores to help small businesses during the holiday season. Ransom Notes Very Special Games is a small games company that specializes in party games. Party games offer quick setup and big table capacity. Of the three games they sent to me, I enjoyed Ransom Notes the most. Ransom Notes contains a collection of words and a deck of cards with different prompts. The players must use the magnetic words to convey the prompt which allows for a lot of creativity and hilarity since the most obvious words are rarely available. The game also goes on for as long as you like. I also enjoyed the other two games they sent; Charty Party and Venns With Benefits. Party games often do the creating for players. Very Special Games leaves just enough blank space to see friends crack some excellent jokes and make everyone laugh. The Plot Thickens Pitching a game like Dungeons & Dragons sounds like fun but it can also scare off people. They might not want to invest the time into making characters or get involved with scheduling regular meetings for the next few months. Storytelling games like The Plot Thickens bridge this gap by fitting the fun of telling romance, science fiction and detective stories with your friends into a bite sized package. Every round of The Plot Thickens features players telling a story by using person, place and thing cards and by connecting their part of the story to cards played by other players. The number of rounds determine the length of the story. There’s not really a winner; instead the points determine who tells the end of the story. Heroes of Barcadia Many adventure tales start in a tavern but Heroes of Barcadia is perfect for staying in one. This light fantasy game features the classic elements of adventures like fighting monsters, exploring dungeons and finding sweet loot with a unique twist. A player’s health meter is their drink and if their glass is empty, they die. This game explores the basics of D&D in a different light hearted direction that’s perfect for friends who agonize over their beer choice when they go out to the microbrewery. It’s also a great choice for fans of Munchkin who have played that game until their cards have been shuffled into dust. Don’t worry about spills; the plastic component construction means they have advantage against liquid damage. Hextech Battletech made a massive comback this year with a huge Kickstarter to fund their next boxed set and an anniversary celebration in 2024 that plans to make it a bigger game than ever. There will be some very well painted tiny giant robots on gaming tables across the world. Hextech enhances that look with pre-painted scenery. The buildings can be used to hinder fire and change up strategy for urban scenarios. They can also represent checkpoints for battlemechs to hold or targets for them to destroy. The pre-painted skyscrapers immerse players in play and help to create unique stories from their battles. Snap Ship Tactics The truth about miniatures games is that they are an evolution of playing with toys. Play is an important part of adult life and just because the toys have changed doesn’t mean people have to stop enjoying downtime. Snap Ship Tactics approaches this from the opposite direction; what if the toys were the same and the players just added rules? This game adapts the popular Snap Ships line of spacecraft toys to a tactical rules set. Players literally build their ships from the included pieces (or the ones from the toy line) before blasting them off into battle. And if there’s no other pilots around, don’t worry; the game comes with a solo mode where the opposition is controlled with a deck of cards. Tenfold Dungeons It’s easy to find some very lavish terrain options for role playing games. Those take time and money and most Dungeon Masters rarely have time to set things up in depth. Tenfold Dungeons offers a set of terrain options that make miniatures looks good while still providing flexibilty to tell the story players want to play. Each set comes with double printed boxes that feature an interior and exterior space. The sets are built to fit modern scale miniatures with one inch equal to five feet. In addition to fantasy sets, Gale Force Nine recently released science fiction themed sets for starships, outposts and gritty futuristic cities.
