North York Moors mine worker camp scrapped after backlash: Anglo American decides against building site for hundreds of employees

Nov 20, 2022

November 20, 2022 - Advertisement - Anglo American abandoned plans to build a temporary camp for hundreds of miners in the North York Moors National Park after a furious backlash. - Advertisement - A global mining company has applied for permission to convert an award-winning caravan site near Whitby to accommodate up to 400 workers. It included 189 two-seat solar-powered cabins and “living houses” that could have a bar. - Advertisement - But locals said the site would be a “disaster” for the area and “shatter the peace” of the nearby village of Egton. Anglo abandoned the plan, saying it would return to the drawing board after “feedback” from the community. - Advertisement - Haven: But Anglo American wanted up to 400 workers on site The FTSE 100-listed mining company had no fallback option if the caravan plan failed. The company hoped the temporary camp would house workers for five years while the two-mile-deep shafts were dug at the nearby Woodsmith project, the largest new mine in the UK in decades. This is the latest setback for a planned potash mine formerly owned by Sirius Minerals. Anglo withdrew its application for a temporary camp after The Mail reached out to dozens of outraged responses to a public consultation on Sunday. The locals feared that the site would scare away wild animals in the area, overburden the sewer system to its limits, and jeopardize the safety of the villagers. HOW MONEY CAN HELP How to choose the best (and cheapest) Isa stocks and units and the right platform for self-investment Others threatened to leave if the site, which would effectively double the size of Egton, went live. One letter objecting to the planning application stated: “Our roads are quite busy without these comings and goings. It is absolutely absurd to believe that this will not add danger to humans and wildlife.” Another said: “I feel so strongly about this that if this is accepted, we may very well leave the area for good.” Several respondents said there could be problems, especially if the site has its own bar or pub. “With alcohol come girls,” one said, adding that it was “natural” for workers to want women’s company. Another said it could “majorly affect the balance of village life and the quality of life of the residents,” adding: “I think Anglo-Americans are naive – or insult our intelligence – to believe that providing a canteen and a gym would be enough to appease 400 people.” “. workers of five years or more. “They will seep into the village, it’s human nature.” Anglo said they have an unacceptable approach to alcohol at the mine itself and that all workers will be tested before the start of the shift. It is clear that both men and women were to be accommodated at the facility. Anglo saved the project in 2020 when Sirius was on the brink of collapse. Anglo has already invested hundreds of millions of dollars in this scheme. An Anglo spokesperson said the company would “look into other options,” adding: “Listen to people’s opinions has always been an important part of the spirit of the project.” DIY INVESTMENT PLATFORMS
