SIG and Amcor partner for responsibly sourced aluminium

Mar 16, 2018

SIG and Amcor partner for responsibly sourced aluminium Packaging companies SIG and Amcor have partnered to push responsible aluminium sourcing further. The collaboration aims to ensure that the aluminum foil supply chain complies with the performance standard of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). Recently, the ASI launched a new certification program for the aluminum value chain. The program is intended to support responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminum, which is said to be an important industrial metal. The certification program focuses on addressing and mitigating the impacts of aluminum production from mines, smelters and casting to semi-fabrication, in addition to the development of products containing aluminum. In order to support the ASI initiative, the two packaging companies have selected a third-party verification body, DNV GL, to undertake pilot assessments on the project. DNV GL principal consultant Colin Morgan said: “Engaging suppliers on improving sustainability performance from mine to manufacturing is a challenging task. “We are proud to work together with SIG and Amcor to bring visibility over their supply chains, build capacity and help all stakeholders to get ready for ASI through our pilot audits. This is a pioneering approach to multi-tier engagement that delivers value and benefits for all involved.” SIG Environmental Affairs and Product related Sustainability manager Dr Christian Bauer said: “Our aim is clear. This is not a pass/fail exercise, but a collaborative approach to share industry best practices and ensure we are at the forefront of sourcing aluminum foil that will meet or surpass the ASI performance standards, ensuring continuous environmental improvement, as well as best in class ethical practices.” Focused on responsible packaging, Amcor is one of SIG’s major aluminum suppliers in Europe. In order to protect the food from light, oxygen and external odors, SIG uses a razor-thin aluminum layer in most of its carton packs. SIG manufactures most of its carton packs using 75% paper board, 21% polymers and 4% aluminum. However, the company aims to source 100% of its direct materials from certified sources only, following its responsibility approach. Last year, collaborative evaluations with value chain partners were carried out in Europe and Asia for the production of aluminum foil and foil stock.
