Former industrial space in Etna to become 'tech flex' hub 51 Bridge Street

Jul 16, 2021

TribLIVE's Daily and Weekly email newsletters deliver the news you want and information you need, right to your inbox. A former steel pipe manufacturing space in Etna is set to become a “tech flex” hub called 51 Bridge Street , the developer AM Group announced Thursday. “The borough of Etna is rooted with a strong history during Pittsburgh’s steel production and 51 Bridge Street will revitalize and transform it into a true innovation hub within the bustling community of Etna,” said Scott Wolkowitz, partner at AM Group. “Generations of innovators and entrepreneurs have built the infrastructure that others may use to create the Etna of the future.” AM Group, based in New York, is involved with two other Pittsburgh developments: 1520 Smallman, on the site of the former Wholey’s storage building in the Strip District, and Matthew’s Loft Condominiums in South Side. At 51 Bridge Street, the developer aims to provide both traditional offices and an area for working machinery, pitching the venue as suitable for assembly, R&D, robotics and AI. Construction is expected to be complete within a year. Potential tenants are touring the site, Wolkowitz said, but no commitments have been made. AM Group is partnering with Shaler Area School District to educate students on how the building is being renovated using sustainable practices. “As a school district, we are always looking for these partnership opportunities,” said Sean Aiken, superintendent of Shaler Area School District. “They are essential learning opportunities for our students. It’s so exciting to see.” Through the partnership, Aiken hopes that robotics programs and sustainability classes can become embedded into the school district “to spark interest and passion that could become a career opportunity” for students. Local officials speaking at the event included state Sen. Lindsey Williams, D-West View, Etna Mayor Thomas Rengers and Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald. “Etna is changing,” said Fitzgerald. “The character is still here and we’re excited that all of these new young people are discovering Etna, moving in and doing this.” Jaxon White is a Tribune-Review intern through the Pittsburgh Media Partnership.
