Airwallex cracks $5b valuation with $275m raise

Sep 20, 2021

Share Australian payments unicorn Airwallex has almost doubled its valuation in six months following the completion of a $US200 million ($275 million) funding round that values it at $US4 billion ($5.5 billion.) The company has previously been backed by a raft of Australian venture capital investors, most recently raising money in March when a $US100 million funding round valued it at $US2.6 billion. However, the latest round was led by secretive US hedge fund Lone Pine Capital, which previously made a killing on Afterpay . Airwallex co-founder and chief executive Jack Zhang said attracting big US investors was a validation of its success. Paul Jeffers Its previous round had added Mike Cannon-Brookes’ Grok Ventures to the cap table, joining Kim Jackson and Scott Farquhar’s Skip Capital, ANZ Bank’s ANZi Ventures ( now called 1835i Ventures ) and longer-standing Aussie backers Square Peg Capital. Alongside Lone Pine in the latest funding round, two other new US-based investors, G Squared and Vetamer Capital Management, also bought in, along with existing backers Salesforce Ventures, 835i Ventures, Chinese fund DST Global and Sequoia Capital China. Airwallex was founded in 2015 and started out providing businesses with a cheaper, faster way to make cross-border payments. Its services have since expanded to include bank accounts, borderless cards (provided in partnership with Visa), online payments acceptance and a suite of application programming interfaces. Advertisement The company said it had chosen Lone Pine to lead an oversubscribed round because of its track record of backing successful tech companies, such as Amazon, Netflix, Shopify, Twitter, PayPal and Square. Airwallex launched its services in the US last month and has earmarked market expansion in the US, UK and Europe for as its main focus for 2021. Its co-founder and CEO Jack Zhang said in a statement that the addition of Lone Pine and its other Silicon Valley investors represented a significant validation of the success of its global growth strategy. “From the start, our vision has been to build a global financial operating system that will allow modern businesses to operate without borders,” he said. “This additional capital enables us to scale our presence in North America, the UK, Europe and other new markets including the Middle East, South America and south-east Asia, and become a dominant leader in global payments.” Mr Zhang said Airwallex had doubled in size in terms of staff numbers during 2021, with almost 1000 people now working for the company. Airwallex’s valuation puts it among the very largest of Australia’s crop of unicorns, only paling in comparison to Canva, which last week announced a raise of the same size as Airwallex’s that valued the design software company 10 times higher at $55 billion. Advertisement Analysis of the Australian technology and venture capital market on Monday showed that Canva now represents more than 90 per cent of all local VC profits and that Canva alone is worth more than the combined value of every other locally backed Australian start-up, including the other unicorns. Airwallex declined to say if it was working towards an initial public offering, or discuss whether it would eventually look to list in the US, rather than Australia.
