Houst hopes for a great (and profitable) summer season

Apr 27, 2023

UKHotViews Earlier this year I thought I saw a glimmer of light at the end of a long tunnel for London-based Airbnb host management services platform, Houst. After a gruelling few years battered by the lockdown, and a restructuring that saw the startup lose over 90% of its value, Houst was starting to report quarterly profits (see Houst hosts second quarterly profit ). However, Houst’s revenues declined in Q1 2023 by over 11%, to £2.26m, and gross profit fell even further (nearly 14%), sending them back to a net loss of over £285k. The revenue decline was expected but the size of the loss was rather greater. Founder and CEO, James Jenkins-Yates, seems more confident about the rest of the year, forecasting net profits every month from April to December totalling £1.3m. This completely depends on them having an absolutely stunning summer season. I admire his optimism and I truly hope he's right. Airbnb has yet to report its results for Q1 2023, so I can’t tell you whether they share the same optimism. Certainly it was a good sign that Airbnb finally turned a profit last year (see Airbnb beds down first annual profit ). Meanwhile, Jenkins-Yates is trying to reduce Houst’s dependence on Airbnb, opening the platform to other home rental sites. But the business depends on homeowners being prepared to hand over 18% of the rental income (plus VAT plus guest cleaning) to Houst to manage their let. This is in addition to the fees they have to pay the rental platform. Maybe more of them will feel inclined to just ‘do it themselves’.
