Helps San Francisco Bay Area Single Mothers Escape Poverty
SAN JOSE, CA--(Marketwired - November 30, 2015) - Tech CU (Technology Credit Union), announced this week it has partnered with WANDA ( Women's Achievement Network and Development Alliance ) to support financial literacy programs for single moms in the San Francisco Bay Area. The credit union is giving both financial and resource support to the nonprofit, including a cash grant, volunteer hours and free educational seminars led by Tech CU's financial experts. WANDA provides access to education, networking and a structured two-to-one savings match program that helps single moms achieve a specific asset-based goal, such as securing retirement, a home or an education. For many women, the program not only helps provide a way out of poverty, it gives them financial lessons to pass on to their children. Owning assets also gives the women and their children a means to survive economic hardship and provides security for their future. Tech CU's SVP of Marketing Kate Duggan, who will also join WANDA's Leadership Circle, said of the organization, "WANDA successfully addresses poverty in the Bay Area by offering a hand up, not a hand out. They prove that lives change dramatically as a result of learning life skills and basic financial management. Now in its eighth year, WANDA has helped more than 100 hard-working, low-income single mothers through their 3-year program. " Through WANDA, Abea learned how to save money and raised her credit score from 640 to 751. Ezinne U. Agwaramgbo and Caitlyn A. Kelly, both of Algiers, are two of the Louisiana’s National Achievement Scholarship recipients for 2014. They were awarded $2,500 each. Agwaramgbo attends Lusher Charter School and has chosen medicine as a career field. Kelly, who attends Benjamin Franklin High School, will focus on the field of neuroscience. Recipients of the National Achievement $2500 scholarships are students who are finalists in the 2014 competition. The scholarships are awarded on a regional representation. Algiers Charter School Association and the West Bank YMCA will hold a health and wellness fair on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Federal City YMCA. James Alexis, director of athletics for Algiers Charter Schools, said, “We want all of the students in the community to come and have fun and enjoy the activities we have planned.”
Events planned include a 1-mile kids fun run, basketball and tennis mini sports clinics, local school performances and cabbage ball and flag football championship games. The schools competing for the championships are William J. Fischer, McDonogh 32, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Martin Behrman, Lafayette Academy, McDonogh 42, Alice Harte and Paul Habans. There will also be face painting, storytelling, camp games, arts and crafts, along with cooking demos, fire and police safety and health screenings. The spouse of a high-ranking Jefferson Parish public schools administrator is part of a company under contract with the school system for teaching and staff development tools. But the Louisiana Ethics Board says the relationship is not in violation of any laws . Kathleen Green Murphy, who is married to Jefferson's chief network officer, Bill Murphy, works for The Achievement Network. The school system regularly contracts with that organization for in-school staff development and support and testing materials. She works as a director of school support and provides technical support during testing and the uploading of test results. She also observes and coaches principals and provides support for school staff. Her husband oversees all the networks of public schools in Jefferson Parish. He is not in charge of The Achievement Network's contract, however. It is managed by the district's chief strategy officer, Jacob Landry. Neither Murphy nor his wife have received any promotions or benefits as a result of the school system's contract with The Achievement Network. The Ethics Board, at the request of the school system's chief legal officer, Patricia Adams, considered whether there was a conflict of interest for the couple and decided last week that no action needed to be taken.
