ADVERTORIAL: Meet Eden, a Marple student who received an offer from Oxford University after support from her college

Sep 13, 2022

Meet Eden, a Marple student who received an offer from Oxford University after support from her college Eden is looking forward to studying at Oxford this September, and she thanks staff at Marple Sixth Form College for their help and support 12:47, 13 SEP 2022 Advertorial We spoke to science student and former student, Eden, to find out about her experience at Marple Sixth Form College (Image: Marple Sixth Form College) When young people complete year 10 and are faced with deciding on that ever-important next step in their education, they are often encouraged to weigh up their options, and select a path that will best excel them in their chosen subjects. Firm in the belief that the place they chose to study will carve the way to the next step in their education, and later their career, students often feel pressure when it comes to choosing where to study after GCSEs. In the post Covid-era young people are now demanding more from schools and colleges. It is now no longer sufficient for a college to only have a reputation for helping pupils to achieve good grades and go on to well-respected universities, it's also equally as important for colleges to offer the necessary support to students so they are able to overcome challenges unique to themselves. One such college in Greater Manchester which excels at both is Marple Sixth Form College, which is holding an open day on Thursday September 22 from 4.30pm until 7pm. Students can register online to explore the many options the college has to offer. One of the unique advantages of Marple Sixth Form College is that it is part of The Trafford College Group which also includes The Cheadle College, Stockport College, and slightly further afield, Trafford College. As part of a wider group of sister colleges across the region, each offers differing opportunities to students, with a wide range of qualifications and learning styles. We spoke to science student and former student, Eden, to find out about her experience at Marple Sixth Form College after receiving an offer from Oxford University to study medicine. She said: "I chose Marple Sixth Form College over other colleges because of its small size. I found the idea of having smaller classes very appealing as I thought it would give me a better chance to ask questions. At the open day, all the staff were friendly and inviting, which is exactly how I have found them to be as teachers." Eden thoroughly enjoyed her time there, she said: " I have really enjoyed my time at college . Although A-levels require a lot of work, I have had great fun making new friends and spending time at college. The college has been exactly as I had hoped when I visited on the open days – it has a great friendly environment. The college has been supportive of all of my aspirations and set me up for a good future in further education." With a strong idea of what she wanted to study after college, Eden was able to choose her A-levels accordingly: "I studied biology, chemistry and physics A-level. I chose to study biology and chemistry initially as I intended to apply for medicine at university, and these two subjects were necessary to apply. I later chose physics as I wanted another science subject and the course appealed to me. "I have always been interested in science, and knew that I would want to pursue a science related degree at university, so taking all three sciences kept my options open. Additionally all three sciences were on the same exam board (AQA), which was the exam board that my GCSE sciences were on, which made learning the style of the exams easier." Her choice to become a doctor was influenced by some of her personal experiences: "I have wanted to be a doctor since I was diagnosed with diabetes at age 12. Since then, I have always taken an interest in studying science, so decided to combine this with my desire to help people and pursue medicine." After copious amounts of hard work and support from the college, as well as overcoming personal challenges, Eden received incredible results and an impressive collection of university offers. She said: "My results were A*A*A, awarded in biology, chemistry and physics, respectively. I received an offer from Oxford University and the University of Liverpool to study medicine and an offer from Aberystwyth University to study robotics and artificial intelligence." Eden faced some personal challenges throughout her time at Marple Sixth Form College, and she felt as though the college offered the support she needed to achieve her goals whilst still being able to look after herself physically and emotionally. She explained: "I have had some health problems whilst at college and had to resit my first year due to this. I’ve always had great support and all the staff were encouraging and welcoming on my return, to restart my first year again. There is lots of support available from house monitors, tutors and the wellbeing staff, as well as class teachers being open to talk." Eden enjoyed making new friends at Marple Sixth Form College, and recognised the support of the staff (Image: Roscoe Rutter Ltd) "As a student that was aiming for high results, I struggled with anxiety over exams and what grades I might achieve. When I mentioned this to my teachers they helped reassure me and gave advice on managing exam stress. My teachers were always willing to answer any questions and went through topics that I was unsure about before each final exam, during in their own free periods. "I felt that my teachers were easy to approach when I needed help, and went above and beyond for their students. They were always willing to answer questions about content, both during and out of class. "I always felt my teachers had all their students best interests at heart. We were given lots of resources to revise and prepare for the exams, many of which were prepared by the teachers themselves based on needs of students in previous years. During second year all my teachers introduced extra support classes during their free periods to allow us to come in and go over any content we needed clarifying before the exam. When I received my medical school interview offers my teachers offered any help they could with preparations." One of the things Eden noted as helpful was the style of teaching, she said: "I think the style of teaching and the end of term assessments that Marple Sixth Form College had helped me prepare well for my A-level exams. In biology, chemistry and physics we learnt from PowerPoints and wrote in booklets, which covered all content on the specification, so these were my main source for the content when revising, and helped me know exactly what I needed to. "At Marple Sixth Form College we did five 'key assessments' in class each academic year, which at first seemed overwhelming, but as I sat down to sit my A-levels I realised how helpful this had been to prepare me for the real exams." Eden would recommend Marple Sixth Form College to other students, and she shared her advice to those who are embarking on the next stage of their academic journey after GCSEs. She said: "My advice for students thinking of attending Marple Sixth Form College would be to plan out your time. From my experience of A-levels I know that you will be given a lot of work outside class, and you'll need to review a lot of content. "Planning out your time, and using free periods to complete some of this work - the library is the best place to do this without distractions - allows you to have more time to rest at home." "Also, the free college bus is a great service which can save you a lot of money and time planning out public transport routes." Attend Marple Sixth Form College's open event on Thursday 22nd September from 4.30-7pm to meet its tutors, explore the college facilities and have a go at interactive activities.
