Back in November 2014, Google Maps received a big update on Android and iOS . One of the many additions was price and ride duration estimates for Uber when requesting directions, assuming you had the Uber app installed. The partnership was clearly a success, as Google is now expanding it to other ride-hailing services. To house the five new offerings, Google Maps is getting a dedicated tab for ride services that will sit beside the existing car, transit, walking, and biking options. If you have one of the aforementioned apps installed, you’ll be able to tap on the ride service tab to see fare estimates and pickup times if a car is available near you. Selecting a service will take you directly to the app, where you can book your ride with another tap. Furthermore, Google Maps may even show ride service availability when viewing the map in walking and transit directions. It will also give you multiple ride services options for each provider (Uber, for example, will now show uberX, uberXL, and UberBLACK choices). Google’s hope is that when you’re trying to figure out how to get somewhere, you’ll launch Google Maps first. And you should, because otherwise you’ll just be wasting time: “it can take precious minutes to figure out whether it’s faster to hop on a bus, walk a few blocks, find a ride-sharing service, or hail a taxi,” the company points out.
