Suning Commerce Group has made a strategic investment in 8Day Online, a campus e-commerce start-up backed by Shunwei Capital and Fosun Kinzon Capital. The investment value was not disclosed. 8Day Online is among the earliest start-ups to focus on the campus e-commerce market, providing swift delivery services to student dorms via mobile apps on snack food and other fast moving consumer goods. The company says it currently operates in 1,200 universities in 52 cities, with over three million registered users. In 2015, there were 37 million university students in China, the largest student group globally. These students spend over RMB400 million (US$60 million) annually, and are early adopters of new technology. But the student community is still small compared to the overall Chinese consumer market. 8Day Online says it plans to use the strategic financing to expand its business scope into community e-commerce, serving those in residential areas and office buildings. Suning, as one of the largest privately owned retailers in China, will help 8Day Online in offline operations and supply chain resources. Launched in 2013, 8Day Online previously raised tens of millions U.S. dollars in series A and B from Shunwei Capital and Fosun Kinzon Capital. In 2016, it raised RMB200 million (US$30 million) in a series B+ round from Longliqi Group, a company that manufactures household cleaning, personal care, healthcare and pet care products.
