In case you missed it in our post comparing the 2010 M&A activity of the major tech companies, it’s worth highlighting that Microsoft has announced zero acquisitions year-to-date in 2010. While Google has been active doing many smaller acquisitions, and HP and IBM are doing larger deals and Facebook and Twitter are also doing acquisitions, generally of the talent type, Redmond-based Microsoft is notable for its absence.

In the last five years, Google acquisitions have tended to be VC or angel investor-backed with 3 of every 4 acquisitions completed by Google having received external financing. As we’d previously noted, Google has been on an acquisition tear this year relative to its own historical pace as well as relative to its technology company brethren/competitors.
Below is the breakdown of acquisitions by year and the percentage receiving external financing vs. not. As you’ll see, the proportion of companies Google has acquired which are externally financed has increased over the period in question.

After last week’s lackluster funding data, investors were back to business as private company financing soared to $499 million driven by a whopping 126 deals this past week. California held onto the top position with 40% growth in funding and nearly double the number of deals vs. the prior week. While California showed strong growth, it was the emergence of the Southern States (Tennessee and Georgia) that lifted funding totals. Tennessee followed California in funding just edging out Massachusetts for the second spot. The Top 5 funding league table was rounded out by Massachusetts, Georgia and Washington. After three weeks of slow activity, Massachusetts returned to a healthy level of funding with over $60 million. Georgia set a new high for weekly funding and made the funding list for first time this year. Washington continues to outpace New York and Texas so far in the third quarter. Finally, while New York placed sixth in funding this past week, it should be noted that the Empire State was second overall in deal volume. Interactive charts on the past week’s dealflow are below (they may take a second to load). To see profiles on the private companies receiving funding in the last week, logon to CB Insights.

California was still the top location for funding despite a 40% decline in deal volume compared to the prior week. North Carolina claimed the second spot with a second consecutive week of strong dealflow and its largest single deal for the year. The top 5 funding league table was rounded out by Washington, New Jersey and Colorado.
